Kings
In Disguise take their name from the one act play written
by James Vance. The play is the story of a young boy who
runs away from his troubled home and along the way is
taken in by hobos' who refer to themselves as Kings In
Disguise in an attempt to conceal their real identities
and lend a sense of dignity to their otherwise arduous
lives. It was eventually released as a wonderful graphic
novel featuring the brilliant artwork of Dan Burr and
published by Kitchen Sink Press.
Since
they formed in 1990 on a farm in rural New Jersey, Kings
have recorded three critically acclaimed CD's and played
they're brand of hillbilly funk n' folk for music lovers
up and down the East Coast. The band was voted "Best
Live Band" of 1997 by the N.W. New Jersey Awards
Association, a group of music writers, club owners and
record store owners in N.W. Jersey.
They've
headlined shows in front of thousands in NYC's Central
Park and opened up for some of their heroes such as Van
Morrison, Taj Mahal, Graham Parker, Dr. John, Alejandro
Escovedo and Dave Alvin. After Mr. Alvin heard the bands
opening set this past summer he commented, "That
guy's a great fiddler with a cookin' little band!"
Kings
In Disguise regularly back up rock and roll hall of famer
Rick Danko of the Band at such venues as the Bottom Line
and colleges and clubs throughout the North East. After
Kings played a show at NYC's Irving Plaza with Rick he
said, "That's the most energy I've felt on stage
since the early days with the Band !"
Kings
are hard at work on their fourth CD which will include
guest performances from Rick Danko and Alejandro Escovedo.
The band will also be performing on Mr. Danko's upcoming
studio album.
